Ambia bahar orange crop insurance in Maharashtra: what it covers, who can enrol, how to apply
Ambia bahar orange insurance in Maharashtra is the Restructured Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme under PMFBY. It pays when your area's reference weather station records a notified trigger, such as heat or unseasonal rain, not when you count loss in your own orchard. Dates and amounts change every year, so read the current notification.
Last checked (AI-assisted): 16 Oct 2026. Checked on 16 Oct 2026 against published ICAR, state agricultural university and FAO guidance with AI assistance. Not yet reviewed by an agronomist or tested with farmers. No spray, pesticide, fertiliser or irrigation amount is given here; for those, test your soil and ask your KVK or an agronomist.
What does ambia bahar orange insurance cover?
It is weather insurance. The scheme uses weather readings as a stand-in for crop yield; it does not measure the damage in your orchard.
The central guidelines list deficit rainfall, excess rainfall, unseasonal rainfall, dry spells, high temperature, low temperature, humidity and wind speed as the perils a state can use. Which perils, which limits and which covered period apply to each fruit is set by the state government in its notification.
Why is no claim paid when my orchard is damaged?
Because the payout follows the readings at the notified weather station for your revenue circle, not the state of your orchard. The guidelines say all claims are settled on the actual data recorded by that station, and there is no procedure to change a recorded reading.
The formula is (observed reading minus the notified trigger) times a notional payout. If the station does not cross the trigger, nothing is paid, even if your trees were hurt. Hail is notified in some places as a separate optional add-on; check the notification for your circle and fruit.
Who can enrol?
Any farmer growing a notified fruit in a notified area can enrol, including tenants and sharecroppers who produce a lease or whatever papers the state accepts. The scheme is voluntary. A loanee farmer who does not want cover must give the bank a declaration at least seven days before the enrolment cut-off date; otherwise they are covered automatically.
In Maharashtra the AgriStack Farmer ID is mandatory and the e-peek pahani entry must match the crop you insure, or the application is cancelled. KVK Yavatmal (Dr. PDKV) stated this for the 2025-26 mrig bahar. News reports say the Farmer ID is needed for ambia bahar 2026-27 too; confirm the current rule at the bank or taluka agriculture office.
Where and how do I apply, and which documents are needed?
First ask whether ambia bahar is notified for orange in your revenue circle. Then pay the premium and apply through one of these:
- Your nearest bank branch, or an Aaple Sarkar Seva Kendra (CSC). The Divisional Joint Director of Agriculture for Amravati division gave the same advice.
- The national crop insurance portal, pmfby.gov.in. For information, go to the circle agriculture officer or the taluka agriculture officer.
- Documents: land record of rights (the 7/12 extract in Maharashtra), Aadhaar number, bank account details with IFSC, a declaration of the crop, the Farmer ID, and the e-peek pahani entry.
What is the premium and what is the last date?
Under the 2020 central guidelines, the farmer pays at most 5 per cent of the sum insured, or the actuarial rate, whichever is less, for horticultural crops. Government subsidy covers the rest. The sum insured per hectare and the premium for orange come from the state notification and change from year to year.
So we do not print an amount or a date here. The state approved the scheme for 2024-25 and 2025-26 by a Government Resolution dated 12 June 2024. News reports from October 2026 say applications for ambia bahar 2026-27 have opened, and each fruit has its own last date. Ask the bank or taluka agriculture office for the date for orange.
What can a satellite photo do for insurance?
A satellite does not decide your claim; the weather station does. What it can give you is a dated record of how your orchard's greenness changed. That helps you understand what happened. It does not win a claim. Our weekly field message works the same way: it shows what changed and when.
What to check in your field or orchard this week
- Ask your bank or taluka agriculture office: is orange notified for ambia bahar 2026-27 in my revenue circle, and what is the last date for orange?
- Check that your Farmer ID exists and that the e-peek pahani entry shows the orchard and the crop you want to insure.
- Keep the 7/12 extract, Aadhaar and bank account details ready.
A Watch message says only what changed and what to check. It never names a product, a fertiliser or an irrigation amount.
Questions
Is santra pik vima compulsory?
No. Under the 2020 central guidelines the scheme is voluntary for all farmers. A loanee who wants out must give the bank a declaration at least seven days before the cut-off date; otherwise they are covered.
What is the last date for ambia bahar santra pik vima 2026-27?
It is not printed here because each fruit has its own date and it can change. Ask the bank, CSC or taluka agriculture office, and check pmfby.gov.in.
How much is the premium for orange crop insurance (santra pik vima hafta)?
Under the 2020 central guidelines the farmer pays at most 5 per cent of the sum insured for horticultural crops. The actual rupees and sum insured are set by the state's notification for the year.
Is hail damage covered?
Hail is notified in some places as an optional add-on. Check the current notification or ask the bank whether it applies to orange in your circle.
Why was my claim not paid although my trees were damaged?
Because the claim follows the reading at your circle's weather station, not the damage in your orchard. If that station did not cross the notified trigger, nothing is paid. The taluka agriculture officer can explain your circle's data.
